Biography
Travis Sippel is an associate professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He received is B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas in 2007 and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University in 2009 and 2013, respectively. Prior to joining the MAE faculty at Mizzou, Sippel served as an assistant professor and associate professor at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa.
Sippel’s research is in the area of energetic materials, an interdisciplinary topical area involving the study of synthesis, fabrication, and combustion of propellants, explosives, and pyrotechnics. His recent research activities involve the development of novel strategies of coupling microwave frequency electromagnetic fields with energetic materials for the purpose of developing ‘smart’ energetic materials with dynamically controllable energy output and sensitivity, improved safety, and greater utility. Research also involves novel energetic material manufacturing techniques and nanoscale materials and has been funded by the DoD, DoD laboratories, and DOE laboratories. Prof. Sippel is the recipient of both the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) Young Investigator Awards.
